From 2007 to 2012, students, faculty and staff and members of the off-campus community—our heroes—were honored at the Campus Awards Ceremony held in the Student Union each spring.

In May 2013, new criteria were established for candidate selection of the HERO Awards to focus solely on the important work of students at Boise State.

The Distinguished Student Hero Award was created for students who have completed 50 or more hours of direct involvement toward fostering diversity and creating inclusion on and off campus.

The Making Justice Visible Certification has been created to recognize students who have acquired critical knowledge and understanding about the impact of oppression on non-dominant groups in our society. Students who have completed 30 or more hours of involvement with underrepresented populations qualify.

Students are selected according to the following criteria:

  • Interacts with students of different backgrounds by engaging in intercultural dialogue and participating in identity awareness groups.
  • Demonstrates understanding of differing intersectionalities of oppression.*
  • Creates cultural experiences on campus, to promote inclusiveness, diversity and pluralism.**
  • Participates in significant intellectual exchanges among international students and underrepresented groups.
  • Involved in community outreach to assist underrepresented groups on and off campus.
  • Demonstrates a true understanding of what it means to be an ally to all people from all cultural backgrounds regardless of race, class, gender, religion and sexual orientation.
  • Participates in various events and programs that examine power, privilege and oppression in our society.

*Intersectionality is the study of intersections of power dynamics, such as gender, race, ability, class and sexual orientation and how these socio-cultural categories contribute to social inequality, marginity and oppression.

**Pluralism is the understanding that people need to be met where they are and allows us to see non-dominant communities with the same validity as dominant ones.
